Sampling

Shoe Samples Explained: What They Cost, How Long They Take, and What to Check

No serious buyer places a bulk footwear order without holding a sample first — and no reliable factory asks you to. But sampling is also where misunderstandings start: Is the sample free? Why is there a fee for a style the factory already has? How long until the courier rings? Here is exactly how sampling works at our Chengdu factory, so you can plan your timeline and budget with no surprises.

1. Why Sampling Always Comes First

A sample is the only way to verify what photos and video calls cannot fully show: leather hand-feel, stitching density, sole bonding, fit and true color under natural light. It protects both sides — you confirm the quality before committing to hundreds of pairs, and we confirm we have understood your specification correctly. That is why sampling is built into every order we take, from a 100-pair trial to a full container.

2. How Much Does a Shoe Sample Cost?

This is the question every buyer asks first, so here is the straight answer — the same policy you will find on our FAQ page:

  • In-stock styles: free sample. If we have the finished pair in stock, we send it free of charge — you only cover the international courier fee.
  • Produced fresh: a sample fee applies. If your pair needs to be produced — even when it is an existing catalog style with patterns ready — materials must be sourced, the line must be set up, and a worker spends real time on one single pair. A sample fee is quoted per style with your inquiry.
  • New pattern development: quoted case by case. If we are developing your own design from scratch — new last, new patterns, new sole tooling — development work is quoted separately based on complexity.

Why charge anything at all? Because a one-off sample costs the factory far more per pair than bulk production does. The fee simply covers real material and labor, and it filters for serious buyers — which keeps our sample room fast for everyone. For confirmed bulk orders, sample costs are handled flexibly as part of the final order confirmation.

3. The Sampling Timeline: 7–12 Days Plus Courier

A typical sampling run for women's leather shoes takes 7–12 days: pattern making (1–2 days), material cutting (1 day), stitching and lasting (2–3 days), sole attachment and finishing (1–2 days), and sample QC (1 day). Add 3–7 days for international express, and you can hold your sample roughly 2–3 weeks after confirming the spec. The full step-by-step workflow — from tech pack to shipment — is in our OEM/ODM process guide.

One tip from the sample room: the single biggest cause of sampling delays is not production — it is slow feedback loops. Clear reference photos, confirmed materials and fast replies on our questions can easily save you a week.

4. What to Check When Your Sample Arrives

When the courier arrives, resist the urge to approve after a quick look. Spend twenty minutes on this checklist:

  • Fit and sizing — wear-test the pair; check length, width and heel height against your target market's expectations.
  • Leather quality — grain consistency, softness, smell, and how the leather creases when flexed.
  • Stitching — even stitch density, no loose threads, clean back-tacks at stress points.
  • Sole bond — press the sole edges firmly; there should be no gaps or lifting.
  • Branding — logo position, color accuracy, insole print quality.

One or two rounds of revisions are completely normal. Point out exactly what to change — photos with annotations work best — and we will rework only the affected components, not start from zero.

5. From Approved Sample to Bulk Order

Once you approve the sample, your order moves to production scheduling. This is also the moment to confirm the commercial details: final quantity per style and color (our MOQ guide explains the 100–200 pair logic), packaging, payment structure and the shipping plan. Bulk production for 100–500 pairs based on existing styles normally takes 20–35 days after sample approval, with quality checks at material intake, in-line assembly and final inspection.
